Overview

           

The Information Technology (IT) Director is a Christian role model for all students, parents, and employees. They actively hold forth the mission, vision, core values, philosophy, and goals of Portland Christian Schools as stated in the Board Policy Manual. The individual who holds this position should be a mature believer and reflect the purpose of the school to honor Christ at all times.

 

The IT Director is responsible for administering the information technology operations of the school in accordance with Board Policy.  This position reports to the Superintendent.  Within the organization, the position has primary working relationships with the Superintendent, the administrative team, and all school offices.

 

The primary duties of the IT Director involve managing the information technology department and directing the work of all department employees.  The IT Director, in consultation with the Superintendent, has authority to hire, fire, advance, promote, and make other employee status changes within the department. The primary duties of the IT Director involve non-manual work that are directly related to the operations of Portland Christian Schools and include the exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.

Departmental Responsibilities

 

Overview: Maintain and monitor end-user workstations and productivity on local area network. Perform a variety of maintenance, software installation, end-user support and training tasks to ensure end-user workstations and network performance meet school and user requirements. Provide support to staff on all school-supported applications. Troubleshoot computer problems, determine source and advise on appropriate action. Complete application project-based work. Perform responsibilities in accordance with all school standards, policies and procedures. Specific departmental responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for students and employees seeking technical assistance on technology issues. Provide excellent customer service in this capacity.
  • Coordinate and/or provide training to school staff in network and software use.
  • Model effective use of technology in the classroom and media center for teachers and students.
  • Offer support and technical assistance to employees and students who are using software, hardware, or other computer systems and need help completing tasks or troubleshooting problems through diagnostic tests.
  • Set up new faculty and staff users including network set up, enrolling them in proper user groups, email set up, various software logins, configuring proper drives and printers, and orienting users on how to use their computer.
  • Set up new student users including setting up logins, orientation for students to IT resources on campus, ensuring students can login to their Chromebook and email, and introduction as an ongoing resource for the student.
  • Establish best practice guidelines for users and equipment.
  • Assess levels of teacher technology-based understanding, skills, and integration within the classroom.
  • Facilitate or conduct technology-focused professional learning for school and district staff.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students to identify, analyze, explore and meet the school’s teaching and learning technology needs.
  • Craft a quarterly instructional technology newsletter to convey updates, tips and other newsworthy highlights.
  • Apply systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine hardware, software, and system functional specifications.
  • Perform and/or oversee software and application installation and upgrades.
  • Test and modify computer programs when necessary and appropriate, based on user and system requirements.
  • Troubleshoot networks, systems, and applications to identify and correct malfunctions and other operational difficulties.
  • Maintain network updates for service and security.
  • Troubleshoot Internet issues including monitoring overall speed for both campuses, checking in with Internet providers on services available, calling Internet providers when service is down, and working through issues when techs need to come out to campus.
  • Troubleshoot wifi issues including checking with teachers on performance, monitoring wifi software for number and type of users and devices connected to Wi-Fi, installing additional AP units around campus to improve Wi-Fi, working with teachers and Administration on Wi-Fi reliability (i.e. out on athletic fields).
  • Manage Chromebooks & Ipads including tracking inventory, setting up devices, troubleshooting issues, and making repairs.
  • Work with faculty to maintain a list of approved websites for Chromebooks, laptops, iPads, and other student devices as necessary.
  • Manage apps downloaded to iPads through the MDM software and keep our Apple Enrollment current.
  • Manage devices and users on the Google domain.
  • Keep an inventory of all technology devices on both campuses to evaluate replacement and upgrade needs. Research and order IT equipment approved by the Financial Officer.
  • Work with vendors to resolve complex issues with learning and collaborative technologies.
  • Document, test, and modify computer programs related to machine operating systems as needed.
  • Maintain site licenses for department/organization.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with our outside IT vendor to communicate with their Help Desk effectively and to decrease our service calls to the vendor in order to minimize expenses.
  • Perform data uploads for various software including loading pictures into the SIS and loading student data into Google for logins and emails at the beginning of each school year.
  • Install, configure, and maintain the student monitoring software including the beginning of school year configuration.
  • Serve as a resource for administrators when investigating and monitoring student computer use.
  • Inspect and repair hardware including replacing video cards, imaging hard drives, fixing connection issues, testing computer monitors, and changing bulbs in projectors.
  • Add, upgrade, and/or configure disk drives, printers, and related equipment for existing employees as needs change.
  • Incorporate principles of district instructional technology plan into school technology planning. Ensure that technology is an integral part of the school improvement plan and supports the school’s curriculum and instructional program.
  • Set up and configure VPN for staff who need off-campus access as approved by the Administration.
  • Ensure employees have appropriate and necessary file permissions.
  • Work with external users on their IT tech needs, i.e. setting up chapel and guest speakers with projectors, supporting board needs during on-campus meetings, InTouch terminals for events.
  • Work with the Auction and other fundraising committees to set up IT needs, including payment processing.
  • Develop and conduct various trainings and provide instruction for system users on operating systems and other applications.
  • Create and maintain thorough documentation of IT processes and procedures on the IT Procedures drive.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored, or accessed by end-users on the network.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Managerial Responsibilities  

  • Interview, select, and train IT department staff.
  • Oversee and encourage staff professional development.
  • Initiate and maintain appropriate communications with department staff.
  • Evaluate department staff in accordance with school expectations.
  • Provide recommendations to the Superintendent for hiring and termination of department staff.
  • Develop and implement plans of assistance and other disciplinary action for department staff as needed.
  • Perform all departmental managerial functions, including overseeing employee time and attendance, approving timecards, and ensuring staff compliance with school policy.
  • Coordinate with the Financial Officer to manage the department’s budget.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily as outlined above.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical personnel.
  • Ability to install, configure, and maintain personal computers, networks, phone systems, and related hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of computer and/or network security systems, applications, procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to identify and resolve computer system malfunctions and operations problems.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and support new systems and applications.
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google products.
  • Capacity to maintain accurate business and financial records.
  • Positive ability to work with a variety of people in a range of settings.
  • Networking and Active Directory experience.
  • Experience with MDM software and Chrome OS management console.

  • Pass all background checks
  • Complete and maintain 1st Aid/CPR certification, bloodborne pathogens training, Adult/Youth Contact training, and all other required trainings
  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Log and approve monthly time and attendance
  • Must be able to travel between campuses; other minimal travel may be required (primarily local)

While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is moderate but can be loud with many activities going on at once. 

 

Work Environment

 

Primarily work from a campus office with actual work performed on both campuses and occasionally elsewhere in the community.  Must be able to arrange own transportation between campuses and other work locations.
